The Staff Nurse performs entry level nursing work in a state mental health hospital at the advanced beginner level. Wor! ks under the close clinical supervision of more experienced Registered Nurses (Nurse II/III/IV) with minimum latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement and provides basic level nursing care to an assigned group of patients. Assists more experienced nurses in assessing patients nursing care needs. Contributes observations to senior nurses and other treatment team members to assist in planning for the patients' care. Acknowledges, transcribes, and reviews physician orders. Administers medications and basic treatments as ordered and alerts senior nurse of any discrepancies. Performs one to one interactions with patients in order to assess their needs and assists others in providing group interventions. Provides clinical supervision to Licensed Vocational Nurses and Mental Health Workers. Must understand that duties, location of work, and shift/pattern are subject to changes as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital. Must understand! that duties may include exposure to blood or other potentiall! y infectious materials.

Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned. 1. Performs basic assessment of patients nursing care needs by observing and through discussion with the patient and his/her family. (20%) 2. Documents observations of patient behavior and status in the medical record according to facility policy. (15%). 3. Provides one-to-one therapeutic interactions with patients to assist them in identifying sources of anxiety (15%). 3. Provides basic health teaching to assist patients' in meeting their needs and/or assists more experienced nurses in group teaching. (10%) 4. Administers medications and treatments as ordered by a physician or licensed practitioner. (5%) 5. Completes medication administration (MAR) and controlled drug records according to facility policy (5%). 6. Acts as a member of the patients treatment team, by providing inpu! t, along with other professionals into the patient's multidisciplinary treatment plan (10%). 7. Carries out physician orders nad implements basic nursing interventions in accordance with facility policy and appropriate nursing standards of care (10%). 8. Maintains the therapeutic milieu using acceptable standards of nursing care and by providing clinical supervision to Licensed Vocational Nurses and Mental Heatlh Workers (5%) 9. Monitors Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior (PMAB) 1 through 6, and in the absence of other staff members, implements PMAB 1 -3.2. (2.5%). 10. Monitors the appropriate use of restraint or seclusion to ensure the safety of the patient and staff members (2.5%).

Knowledge Skills Abilities:
1. Basic knowledge of nursing procedures and practices. 2. Basic knowledge of the Texas Nursing Practice Act, Rules and Regulations of the Board of Nurse Examiners for the State of Texas. 3. Ability to provide basic professional and ! individualized nursing care to a group of patients in a state mental he! alth hospital. 4. Knowledge of human behavior, social interaction, and basic interpersonal relations theories. 5. Basic nursing skills such as health assessment, treatment planning, and evaluation. 6. Ability to formulate nursing diagnoses or problem lists from assessment data. 7. Ability to respond with basic skills in emergency situations. 8. Ability to obtain certification for Basic Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and ability to perform CPR in clinical setting. 9. Ability to complete Prevention and Management of Aggressive Behavior (PMAB) 1 - 3.2 prior to work on patient care unit. 10. Physical and emotional ability to manage sudden and extreme acts of aggression. 11. Ability to speak, read, and write English in order to communicate effectively with patients and their families. 12. Skill in communicating effectively with subordinate staff in order to provide effective clinical supervision.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
Licensed to pract! ice professional nursing in the state of Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Initial Selection Criteria:
Licensed to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Texas or state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact, or possess a temporary permit to practice nursing in the State of Texas. Available to work at least every other weekend.

Requisition ID# 229545 This is a perpetual posting for our entry level staff RN. Open position may be on Adult, Children and/or Specialty Units at Austin State Hospital on 7-3, 3-11, or 11-7 shift. No rotating shifts. 15% shift differential paid for 3-11 and 11-7. Must work every other weekend. Must attend a 15 day orientation M-F 8-5.
