:

The Phlebotomist II is responsible for performing phlebotomy and point-of-care testing as! designated; answering telephones and verbal reporting of verified test results; performing clerical tasks; participating in appropriate continuing education; performing work in compliance with laboratory policies and procedures.

Essential Job Functions

:

1. Performs bleeding times, venipuncture and fingerstick specimen collection on neonate, infant, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients; collection is timely; patients experience minimal discomfort; observes standards for dual patient identification.

2. Performs point-of-care testing, I-STAT, collection of sweat chloride samples, type checks, and Unopette platelet collection (as appropriate per facility).

3. Answers telephone and verbally reports verified test results. Performs patient registration, processes patient reports, and performs other assigned clerical duties such as: filing, printing, faxing.

4. Records information consistently and accurately on phlebotomy ! and nursing sign-off sheets.

5. Processes all specime! n types using appropriate computer functions; cleans work area and phlebotomy trays; stocks supplies.

6. Communicates and interacts with patients, physicians, co-workers, vendors and the public in a professional and pleasant manner.

1. Performs quality control and preventive maintenance on point-of-care instrumentation as assigned.

2. Orients and trains new employees.

3. Supports the mission and vision of the Methodist Healthcare System and demonstrates excellent customer service at all times.

4. Understands and is committed to helping Methodist Healthcare and it associated facilities achieve its goals.

5. Must learn and comply with System and facility safety policies and rules; must use appropriate safety equipment and procedures at all times; must immediately report all unsafe conditions to supervisors; must be familiar with all safety features of equipment, tools or materia! ls encompassed by job duties; and must check with supervisors (prior to job performance) if there is a question as to the safe procedure to be used for any job function.

6. Adheres to the MHS Code of Conduct and demonstrates ethical behavior as expected by our patients, colleagues and the community. Understands the personal obligation to report any activity that appears to violate applicable laws, rules, regulations or the Code of Conduct itself.

7. Completes other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience

:

All hired after 9/8/2010 must have a high school diploma or GED. One year of phlebotomy experience with expertise in adolescent, adult, and geriatric collections required; experience with neonatal, infant, and pediatric specimen collection preferred. Clerical office work experience preferred.

(X) INSIDE: Spends approximately 40 hours! or more per week inside.

WORK POSITIONS: (defined in 5% increments of work time): Sitting 10% Standing 50% Walking 40%

LIFTING/CARRYING DEMANDS

( ) SEDENTARY WORK: Lifting 10 lbs. maximum and occasional lifting and/or carrying articles.

(X) LIGHT WORK: Lifting 20 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying articles weighing up to 10 lbs.

( ) MEDIUM WORK: Lifting 50 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 lbs.

( ) HEAVY WORK: Lifting 100 lbs. maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

( ) VERY HEAVY WORK: Lifting objects in excess of 100 lbs. with frequent lifting and/or carrying! of objects weighing more than 50 lbs.
