The primary purpose of the Supervisor Mid-Level Provider in the department Stem Cell Transplantation an! d Cellular Therapy is to promote and maintain the health of SCT/CT patients across the care continuum. Provides direct diagnostic and therapeutic patient care under physician supervision. Impacts quality of patient care and patient outcomes throughout the disease process. Administratively supervises, plans and coordinates a clinical mid-level provider (MLP) team for a designated area. Impacts the clinical mid-level provider teams in a department to include overall operations, staffing, operational planning and budgeting, quality assurance and administration of activities and personnel that impact inpatient and/or outpatient clinical operations.

Key Functions

Administratively supervises mid-level provider staff and operations. Supervises the day-to-day operations and procedures for the clinical practice team. Develops and administers policies and procedures. Ensures that appropriate personnel are in place by developing and managing a staffing plan for the t! eam. Develops and monitors staff compliance with education and! training requirements. Assigns rotations through procedure and fast track or other MLP clinics as well as outpatient physician clinics and/or inpatient service assignment. Remains current in clinical research practices and the department's clinical research protocol priorities. Assesses research protocols for acuity and/or patient complexity and plans for staffing and training needs. Directs mid-level provider staff in appropriate methods for managing protocol-related assessment. Assures that MLPs function in accordance with federal and state regulatory standards and institutional policies and procedures. Ensures appropriate goal alignment of MLPs within department. May participate in auditing of clinical protocol activity to ensure the integrity of protocol management.Functions as a clinical mid-level provider, as licensed, in a proportion appropriate for the team and approved by the department. Must otherwise maintain licensure and continuing education as dictated by the! provider's license and clinical appointment.

  • Performs physical exams and interviews. Documents the review of systems (ROS) and physical exam, as well as the plan of care as decided by the care team. Discusses relevant findings with the physician. Ensures appropriate medications, blood products, and follow-up are ordered and scheduled. Educate patient/family about the stem cell transplant process, medical issues, outcomes, role of the caregiver, medication management. Uses critical thinking to manage care of stem cell transplantation and cellular therapy patients. Required to perform procedures i.e. bone marrow aspiration, skin biopsies etc. as per individual credentialing through the Medical Staff office.
Participates as team member by documenting, when appropriate ROS, physical exam and plan of care in a timely manner; coordinate and collaborates with other members such case managers, social worker, etc.

Submits charges per institutio! nal charge capture policies.

Actively participates in Physicia! n Assistant organizations, maintains all required licensures and certifications as determined by institutional and departmental credentialing standards. Attends institutional and departmental and midlevel provider meetings as scheduled.

Demonstrates role and responsibility of SCT/CT PA when precepting and educating new employees.

Outpatient responsibilities:
1. Evaluate patients in the outpatient settings (i.e. Fast Track, ATC and SCT/CT outpatient clinic)
2. Document evaluations and submit billing on a timely basis per institutional policy
3. Assist completing SCT/CT flow sheet
4. Complete toxicity and GVHD scale on flow sheet
5. Order medications, blood and platelets
6. Perform skin biopsy
7. Follow-up on tests and consults
8. schedule clinical studies as per guidelines and protocol
9. Work with social work and Physician Assistant staff as a resource for team specific patients
10. Manage complication of CVC.!
11. Co-manage pre-code situations
12. Communicate discharge to home care plan with multidisciplinary team and coordinate long term follow up
13. Coordinate referrals/consults
14. Order appropriate medical interventions based on SCT/CT Care Guidelines.
15. Perform bone marrow biopsy and/or aspiration procedures weekly.
16. Write or facilitate home health orders.
17. Achieves and maintains competency in current technology utilized to perform procedures.

Job Description-Requirements

EDUCATION:
Required: Degree requirements as defined by the Texas State Board Physician Assistant Examiners (TSBPAE) or Texas State Board of Nurse Exmaniners (TSBNE), as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant.

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Two years experience as a clinical mid-level provider.
Preferred: Physician Assistant experience in an academic medical cen! ter setting, hematology/oncology specialty.

LICENSURE/CERTI! FICATION:
Required: Current license and/or certification as defined by the (TSBPAE) or (TSBNE) as required for clinical licensure as an Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant.
Current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification.
