The RN Charge Nurse has advanced leadership skills and is responsible for the coordination of unit operations during a particular shift. In this leadership role, the RN Charge Nurse promotes collaboration among all members of the team, facilitates throughput and prevents or resolves conflict. He/she role models and promotes Methodist Excellence (ME) standards of behavior while providing for an optimal patient care and work environment during the designated shift. Is a resource person to the patient care team. Makes appropriate patient care assignments and is accountable for the quality of nursing care services delivered by self or others under their direction; in accordance with the Texas Nurse Practice Act, hospital policies, procedures and the Texas Board of Nursing rules for delegated nursing tasks (Chapter 224).

Essential Job Functions

:

1. Coordinates, directs, assesses, modifies and formulates an appropriate staff assignment plan t! hat addresses acuity, competency of staff and staff mix of lic! ensed and unlicensed staff

2. Serves as the primary decision maker for clinical operations during a given shift and modifies staff assignment/mix according to the changes in patient acuity and/or volume.

3. Role models professional standards of behavior of the nursing practice as evidenced by the nurse practice act.

4. Serves as primary resource for the unit, to other nursing personnel, physicians and other members of the team. Ensures evidenceĆ¢€"based care measures are followed and demonstrates effective clinical leadership skills.

5. Demonstrates successful conflict resolution in a timely manner with patients, families and other healthcare team members.

6. Consistently demonstrates ME standards of behavior and holds staff accountable for the same.

Qualifications

Minimum Education, Experience, Training, Required Knowledge, Skill, Abilities and Other Job-Related Characteristics

:

1.

Education:
Graduate of an accredited diploma, associates, or baccalaureate degree nursing program

*

RNs hired as of 01/01/2013 that do not have a BSN upon hire must do

all

of the following:
1. Enroll in a BSN or higher degree nursing program within two years of hire date and submit documentation to facility CNO (or designated representative)

2. Complete the BSN or higher degree nursing program within five years of hire date

Note: Verification of high school graduation/GED is required for those who completed

nursing diploma programs.

Experience:
A.

RN II-

Two years clinical experience in the specialty area they are applying.

Exceptions must have senior nursing administrative approval.

3. Employee completes initial and ongoing training and competencies as defined by service

line, facility and department/unit whi! ch are specific to the needs of the patient population

served ! (if applicable).

4.

Preferred:
Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) on hire

Minimum License, Certificates, or Registrations Required

:

1.

Required:
RN License to practice as a professional registered nursing in the state of

Texas

2.

Preferred:
Certification in their specialty

Reporting Relationships

:

Supervised By: Unit Director or designee

Supervision Of: Unit licensed and unlicensed staff
