The Epidemiology Nurse under general supervision of the Infection Control Manager, identi! fies complex infection control problems within Baylor University Medical Center (BUMC). Develops infection control plans for patient care for select groups of patients. Facilitates promotion of a safe Medical Center environment through implementation of effective infection control measures. Evaluates and revises the Infection Control Plan.

Job Functions

I. Utilizes acquired knowledge of epidemiologic principles and infection control practices to identify complex infection control problems, inter-relationships of problems, and sources of infection. Assesses patient care procedures, equipment and environment in order to identify infection risks and trends. Develops and recommends infection control plans and goals based on thorough analysis and interpretation of collected data to eliminate problems or risks. Implements infection control measures as directed by the Infection Control Committee and/or as mandated by regulatory agencies or community

stan! dards.

II. Assesses and utilizes community and Medica! l Center resources available to assist in problem solving related to infection control using continuous quality improvement process.

III. Assists with the development and utilization of data collection methodologies used to identify solutions to infection control problems.

IV. Plans, implements, evaluates and assists others in providing formal in-service programs for Medical Center Staff.

V. Acts as a resource person for Medical Center Staff in planning control measures for patients with complex infection control problems.

VI. Evaluates departmental policies, procedures, and programs related to infection control. Assists Baylor Health Care System (BHCS) Staff in establishing priorities and coordinating infection control activities in complex situations. Works with affiliate Medical Centers to coordinate Infection Control Programs and standardize policies and procedures.

VII. Participates in the establishment of Medical Center sta! ndards for cleaning, disinfection and sterilization through utilization of research findings and identification of expected outcomes for infection control interventions, and collaborates with departments involved in this process. Utilizes knowledge of current infection control literature and research findings for the improvement of infection control practices within the Baylor Health Care System (BHCS).

VIII. Coordinates infection control activities with Medical Center Staff, communicates unsafe practices, and participates on various committees in order to maintain a safe Medical Center environment.

IX. Participates in the evaluation of infection rates and trends by recognizing and interpreting changes and evaluating the effectiveness of planned infection control measures based on the principles of epidemiology.

X. Assists in orienting new departmental employees, conducting infection control related conferences, and providing consultation services! within BHCS.

XI. Remains current in infection control trends ! by participating in professional organizations, seminars and conferences, identifying and assisting in research projects, and reading appropriate research journals.

Qualifications Associate's Degree in Nursing required.
Current Texas RN license.
Minimum of 1 year of experience required.
Previous experience in epidemiology preferred.
