Head Nurse

Employees in this classification are responsible for the planning, organization, direction, and evaluation of patient care services (primarily nursing services) within an assigned specialty or sub-specialty area in one of the! ambulatory clinics. Persons in this position provide supervision and direction to subordinate nursing personnel, coordinating the nursing service with the medical services in order to provide an efficient and professional environment for optimum production in health care for the patient. Employees are also responsible for providing professional nursing care within the assigned area of work. Supervisory duties include but are not limited to interviewing applicants for vacant nursing positions and making the final selection, maintaining personnel records regarding leave time, evaluations, and personnel problems, conducting employee evaluations, approving and coordinating leave time for nursing personnel, and assisting personnel in setting work-related goals. Work is performed under usual clinic conditions.
Major/Essential Functions
- Daily management of smooth clinic operations. Handles any issues that arise, as needed.
- Prepares patients for! exams, takes history, VS, Ht, Wt, assesses reason for visit, ! and documents in chart, accordingly.
- Administers medications, as instructed, noting side effects and contraindications to pt. Documents in Medical Record chart/ EMR .
- Obtains specimen for laboratory tests and prepares paperwork as needed. Documents in Medical Record chart/ EMR , as required.
- Provides patient education on procedures, dressing changes, care at home.
- Responsible for supervision of clinic staff, to include, recruiting new staff, staff evaluations, disciplinary actions, staff meetings, etc.
- Addresses patient complaints or issues, concerning health problems, treatment, etc. Offers instructions and ensures that the situation is corrected or refers to appropriate personnel.
- Screens incoming patient telephone calls to determine urgency of situation and what action should be taken.

Occasional Duties
- Prepares necessary equipment and instruments for examinations, treatment, specialty procedures, minor surgical procedures, and assists physician.
- Operates and supervises the operation of specialized equipment. Also responsible for ensuring the care and maintenance of this equipment. Provides training to staff, as necessary.
- Provides in-service training to existing and new clinic staff. Ensures new and current staff comply with all TTUHSC mandatory trainings.
- Ensures inventory of necessary supplies and equipment is maintained for diagnostic and treatment procedures. Also responsible for ensuring exam/procedure rooms are clean and stocked with nec! essary supplies and equipment.
- Develops and writes clinical de! partmental policies & procedures.
- Attends supervisory and administrative staff meetings to discuss unit operations, staff training manual and development, etc.
- Performs additional duties assigned by Administrator and/or Department Chair within the scope of position, following TTUHSC policies and procedures in order to meet the goals and objectives of the department.
Education:
Graduated from an approved accredited nursing program.
License/Certification:
Current RN license in the State of Texas or ability to obtain a Texas license.
Experience:
At least four years in nursing, with at least two of those years in a supervisory capacity.
