The Amarillo VA Health Care System is seeking a general surgery mid-level provider. The incumbent will assist the general surgeons in the outpatient, inpatient, and OR setting.
The AVAHCS currently offers general medical and surgical inpatient care, day surgery, long term care, primary and specialty care, mental health services, and substance abuse treatment to a population of approximately 80,000 veterans in a primary service area that includes the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles, eastern New Mexico, and southeast Kansas. The AVAHCS currently has 55 total operating hospital beds. Our hospital ADC for FY11 averaged 25. Our ICU consists of 14 beds and we have 120 operating Community Living Center beds. Total patients treated through FY11 was 26,410 with outpatient ! visits totaling 262,917. We have a $140+ million annual budget! . The AVAHCS provides an active teaching environment for medical students and residents through a formal affiliation with Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. The rotation includes residents in Internal Medicine, Family Practice and Specialty Care. Other affiliations provide a variety of educational opportunities in pharmacy, optometry, nursing and various allied health programs.

The general surgery mid-level provider will assist the general surgeons in the outpatient, in-patient and OR setting. The selected mid-level candidate will see on average a patient load of 60 clinic encounters and can assist on 40 surgical procedures monthly. Candidate will be required to take general surgery call on full week per month (call runs Monday-Sunday) and take additional days as assigned by Chief of Surgery according to the general surgery demand. The general surgery mid-level is required to evaluate and provide direct patient care.
Tour of Duty: Monday through Friday
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Citizens! hip. Citizen of the United States.
Education or Training. The candidate must meet one of the following:
(1) A bachelorÂ's degree from a PA training program which is certified by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education of the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA); or
(2) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a bachelorÂ's degree in a health care occupation or a health-related science; or
(3) Graduation from a PA training program of at least 12 months duration which is certified by the ARC-PA and a period of progressively responsible health care experience such as an independent duty medical corpsman, licensed practical nurse, registered nurse, medical technologist, or medical technician. The duration of approved academic training and health care experience must total at least 5 years.
Certification. As of March 12, 1993, certification by the National Commission on! Certification of PhysicianÂ's Assistants (NCCPA) is a requirement for ! employment.
English Language Proficiency. PAs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
