The CNS functions as a health care professional to impact clinical outcomes in three major domains: patients and families, nursing practice and system design. The CNS will serve as an expert clinician, educator,consultant, change agent and researcher. The CNS will work closely with the medical team, nurse managers, nurse educators, NNPs and nursing staff; will serve as a leader, innovator, and role model.

This position is open to Clinical Nurse Sp! ecialists (CNS).

Essential Duties and Responsibilitie! s

The CNS will act as a focal point for evaluating and developing effective patient/family centered evidence-based care strategies for patients with congenital birth anomalies, severe lung, brain, and intestinal diseases, metabolic diseases or extreme prematurity.

Assist in standardizing neonatal care throughout the organization.

Communicate and montor best practices in the NICU.

Perform expert analysis of quality data.

Provide "just in time" education for staff about rare diseases/conditions.

Conduct continuing education for sasoned nursing staff.

Optimize care coordination for NICU patients, ensuring care throughout the continuum.

Provide family teaching for complex discharges.

Provide patient follow-up in Low Birth Weight Clinic.

Promote evidence-based projects on unit.

Qualifications
Education

Master's degree in Nursing.

Licenses & certifications
!
Current RN license (or eligible) in the State of Texas.

Recognition as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (or eligible) by the Texas State Board of Nurse Examiners.

Current CPR/BLS for the Healthcare Provider, and current PALS certification.

Experience

Previous neonatal care experience preferred.

Specific knowledge, skills, and abilities

Must possess the ability to actively identify new areas for learning; regularly create and take advantage of learning opportunities, and use newly gained knowledge and skill on the job and learn through their application

Must possess the ability to hear and communicate with others in a clear, understandable, and professional manner

Must be flexible and adaptable; conditions and environment are unpredictable and change frequently

Must be able to hear the wider range of sound frequencies in order to detect murmurs and other abnormalities

Must possess the a! bility to maintain regular, reliable and punctual attendance

M! ust possess the ability to learn and apply new information, knowledge and experiences in a timely manner

Each member of the Advanced Practice Service will function in a role that, by its very nature, requires a high degree of professionalism. It is imperative that Advanced Practice Nurses manage their individual performance

Demonstrate ownership and responsiveness in their customer service approach to patient care and contributes to an atmosphere of teamwork within their group

This job requires the knowledge and skills necessary to impact nursing practice appropriate to neonates. The individual must demonstrate knowledge of the principles of neonatal growth and development, must possess the ability to assess data reflective of the patient's status and interpret the appropriate information needed to identify each patient's requirements relative to his or her age-specific needs.
