SHIFT WORK HOURS dependent upon position filled: Day Shift - 6:00 AM - 2:00 PM; Evening Shift - 2:00 PM - 10:00 PM; Night Shift - 10:00 PM - 6:00 AM, ROTATING DAYS.

Works under the general supervision of the Unit Nurse Administrator and the direct supervision of the Charge Nurse with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgement. Performs routine patient care in order to assist in providing quality psychiatric s! ervices. Assists in establishing and maintaining an environmen! t that is therapeutic for persons with mental illness. Oversees the work of subordinate personnel in performance of duties assigned by a registered nurse. Work includes shared responsibility for the daily supervision, care, training and general welfare of patients and includes recording information on progress notes and other required forms and communicating with other staff regarding patients. Requires physical and mental abilities to learn and perform the essential job tasks. Employee actively participates and/or serves in a supporting role to meet the agency’s obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Must understand that duties, location of work and shift/pattern are subject to change as determined by the administration to meet the needs of the hospital. Must understand that duties may include exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. Supports the mission and vision of the facility.

! Essential Job Functions:
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency leave policy and performs other duties as assigned.
EJF 1. Transcribes physicians orders, prepares and administers medications based on developmental and age- specific population needs according to acceptable standards, hospital policies and procedures and within the parameters of their educational preparation. 20%
EJF 2. Performs focused nursing assessment for the basic care, treatment and general welfare of patients. This may include assisting with sick call, medical emergencies, providing/monitoring treatments and procedures, performing screening tests, collecting specimens for laboratory examination and scheduling appointments/consultations, etc. 10%
EJF 3. Documents basic information concerning patient behavior, medication administration, treatments, physical condition, changes in mental/physical condition, education provided, etc., according to hos! pital policy and procedures. 10%
EJF 4. Observes and reports signif! icant observations related to patient’s mental/physical condition to the supervising RN and/or other team members as appropriate to promote quality patient care. 10%
EJF 5. Maintains accountability for medications, assigned medication room and the security of assigned unit keys. 10%
EJF 6. Provides basic patient/family education to individuals or groups as appropriate to increase patient knowledge of medications, health/hygiene skills and disease management/prevention, etc., to promote independent living skills. 10%
EJF 7. Serves as an effective member of the treatment team, implements basic nursing care plan, engages patients in therapeutic interactions, and supports unit milieu/programs to assist patients in meeting individual goals. 10%
EJF 8. Demonstrates a commitment to a culture that reduces risk to both patients and staff through support of the hospital’s safety and risk management plans, infection control programs and restraint and seclusion redu! ction strategies. 5%
EJF 9. Is educationally prepared to deliver nursing care to state hospital patients, completes required training and demonstrates competencies as required. 5%
EJF 10. Assumes responsibility for patient care and management of the unit in the absence of the RN with RN support via telephone and immediate on-site availability as needed. 5%
EJF 11. Performs other duties as assigned in order to ensure services are provided. Other duties as assigned include but are not limited to actively participating and/or serving in a supporting role to meet the agency's obligations for disaster response and/or recovery or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation. Such participation may require an alternate shift pattern assignment and /or location. 5%

Knowledge Skills Abilities:

  • Focused nursing assessment;
  • Principles of biological, physical and social science as acquired in vocational nursing school;
  • Nursing tec! hniques and procedures;
  • Continuous quality improvement;
  • Infection control procedures;
  • Mental health and mental illness;
  • Team processes;
  • Medication transcription, administration;
  • Therapeutic communication;
  • Use of medical equipment to include: glucometer, AED, oxygen;
  • Observe, identify and describe verbally and in writing patient behaviors;
  • Patient and family education;
  • Psychopharmacology;
  • Automated computerized programs;
  • CPR, use AED, Heimlich maneuver, first aid, and PMAB (Sections 1-3 required).
  • Successful working relationships with others.
  • National Patient Safety goals in relation to patient care and medication administration.
Bilingual preferred.
Sign language preferred.

Registration or Licensure Requirements:
By the start date, graduation from an accredited LVN program with a valid permit to practice in the State of Texas while awaiting licensure
OR
Must be licensed as a li! censed vocational nurse by the State of Texas or in another state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Initial Selection Criteria:
By the start date, graduation from an accredited LVN program with a valid permit to practice in the State of Texas while awaiting licensure
OR
Must be licensed as a licensed vocational nurse by the State of Texas or in another state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
