Licensed Vocational Nurse

Location: Houston, Texas

Description: Harris County is currently interviewing Licensed Vocational Nurse right now, this job will be situated in Texas. Under direction of the Head Nurse, performs a variety of patient care activities including treatment, medication, and accommodative services to patients within the Harris County Sheriff's Office jail facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Administer all medications and document according to established guidelines on the Medication Administration Record (MAR)
  • Ensure proper storage and handling of all medications
  • Prepare and operate necessary equipment and instruments for examination, treatments, and procedures
  • Perform specimen collection and diagnostic procedures using standard precaution and completes necessary documentation
  • Document vital signs and nursing assessments using the S.O.A.P.E. format on the appropriate nurse assessment protocol form
  • Document clinically relevant information in patient's medical file, including but is not limited to observation of signs, symptoms, test results, behaviors, interventions and response to medications and treatment
  • Communicate medical information within confidentiality guidelines as appropriate to security staff, patient families, attorneys, and other facilities
  • Receive reports from preceding shift, verify patient count, and ensure data collection is complete
  • Responsible for narcotic, sharps, and instrument counts at the beginning and end of shift
  • Perform other assignments and duties as required and/or necessary

Requirements
  • Successful completion of Vocational Nursing training from an accredited college or school in the State of Texas, OR
    • Successful completion of Vocational Nursing training from an accredited college or school in any state AND at least six (6) months of nursing experience in the State of Texas
  • Licensed by the State of Texas to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse
  • Complies with State of Texas requirements for continuing license as a Licensed Vocational Nurse
Additional Requirements
  • Must pass testing requirements and thorough background investigation (written exam, physical test, drug screen, and polygraph examination)
  • Knowledge of rules, regulations, and standards established by professional nursing organizations; national, state, and local regulatory agencies and institutional policies and procedures
  • Basic knowledge of software programs such as MS Office Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Must possess strong communication skills - both written and verbal
  • Must be self-motivated and detail oriented
  • Ability to meet physical demands of the job which include, but are not limited to, standing, bending, walking for extended periods of time, lifting, and transporting patients, and transporting supplies
  • Ability to lift and carry items which may weigh up to 50 lbs
  • Ability to cope with stressful situations
  • Ability to work with diverse populations
  • Ability to lift and carry items which may weigh up to 50 lbs
  • Available to work overtime and/or varying duty hours as deemed necessary; with an excellent attendance record
Working Conditions
  • Direct interaction with inmates
  • May require working under stressful conditions
  • Job duties may result in possible exposure to communicable diseases or body fluids

General Information HOURS:
  • 40 hours per week; overtime and varying duty hours as deemed necessary for departmental needs
SALARY:
  • $4,321.21 Monthly
  • Based on 26 Pay Periods
LOCATION:
  • Downtown, Houston, TX

Preference will be given to current Harris County Sheriff's Office employees that have the requisite experience.
